Want to see landmarks in distant countries, but the cost is too demanding? Or visit extravagant museums, but the tickets are too highly priced? Well, you can! Perhaps not in person, but this is free and overall realistic considering. Those of your who have used Google Earth may be familiar with the street view feature, which allows you to see certain areas in a 360 camera view; this is a neat feature, yes, but the camera quality is sometimes not the best...however, the Google team recently started a project in which they will do highly defined quality 360 tours of famous places - including the inside of of museums and historic buildings, such as the Palace of Versailles or the Smithsonian museum; there's even a very detailed tour of the White House.
One can actually cover quite a lot of ground in these manual tours, and the picture is so well defined that you can see intricate detail in the paintings and other artwork. And it's not just museums, but amazing natural landscapes as well. Also, there are not just a few of these tours; there are dozens of them! You can really spend all day touring the world, if you like.
It's a really incredible idea, and one that I thought was worthy of a blog post. Any of you who are interested should definitely take a look! This is the main gallery page: Google Street view gallery. Travel to your heart's content!
