The "Corpse flower"

This plant, the Amorphophallus titanum also known as the "Corpse flower" smells, disturbingly, just like a corpse. Hence the name.

"The Amorphophallus titanum known as the titan arum, is a flowering plant with the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world. Due to its odor, which is reminiscent of the smell of a decomposing mammal, the titan arum is characterized as a carrion flower, and is also known as the "corpse flower", or "corpse plant"."

"The Amorphophallus titanum is endemic to western Sumatra, where it grows in openings in rainforests on limestone hills. The plant is cultivated by botanic gardens and private collectors around the world. The "fragrance" of the titan arum resembles rotting meat, attracting carrion-eating beetles and flesh flies (family Sarcophagidae) that pollinate it. The inflorescence's deep red color and texture contribute to the illusion that the spathe is a piece of meat."

This is pretty disgusting, right? Can you imagine how that must smell?

Here is a video with a little information about it, and footage showing the wretched thing blooming:

And not only does it exude a putrid scent, it looks hideous on the inside too:

A close relative is the more commonly know Rafflesia, another tropical plant that smells just as lovely:

And this just goes to show that not all flowers have such an elegant scent.
